ASD Packaging Congress united the world in Istanbul

The hub for packaging supply in Europe and Eurasia, Turkey brought together the prominent names in the industry worldwide and all stakeholders in the ASD Packaging Congress 2019 International Packaging Industry Congress organized by the Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) in Istanbul. The two-day event was attended by 45 speakers from 13 countries and 1,000 participants. Mr. Zeki Sarıbekir, President of ASD highlighted the significance of packaging recycling for sustainable development in the packaging industry, contribution to circular economy and to maintain the zero-waste approach, during this opening speech. Speaking also at the closing panel discussion, President of ASD said the industry develops with sustainability in mind and the opportunities created by the new generation for the packaging industry need to be utilized.

Bringing together the notable names in the packaging industry from across the world, the "Sustainable Packaging and Circular Economy” themed ASD Packaging Congress 2019 International Packaging Industry Congress took place in Swissotel The Bosphorus Istanbul on November 21-22. 45 speakers from 13 countries including USA, Germany, Australia, Belgium, UK, Brazil, Finland, France, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Japan and Turkey appeared in 15 sessions conducted over the course of two days in the congress, which was attended by 1,000 participants.

Works conducted on recycling sustainable flexible packaging, rigid plastic packaging, metal packaging, corrugated board, paper/cardboard packaging, glass packaging and also auxiliary materials such as ink with a focus on circular economy were shared with the attendants in 10 presentations over 3 sessions titled "Sustainable Packaging and Circular Economy, Carbon Footprint, Recycling Technologies”. ASD Packaging Congress 2019 also had sessions titled Marketing and Consumer Trends, Industry 4.0 and Digitalization, Quality and the New Legislation in Packaging, Packaging Design, Active and Intelligent Packaging, Global Packaging Industry Statistics, Private Session Digitalized World and Turkish Glass Packaging Industry, Packaging and Shelf Life, Packaging Printing Technologies and New Studies in Food Packaging. Highly comprehensive in scope, the congress aimed to provide efficient results for the attendants.

Packing is a building block for a ‘Sustainable Society'

Making a general evaluation of the two-day congress at the closing panel discussion of "Sustainable Packaging and Circular Economy” themed ASD Packaging Congress 2019 International Packaging Industry Congress, President of ASD Mr. Zeki Sarıbekir indicated that packaging is one of the building blocks for "Sustainable Society” owing to its social, economic, environmental and cultural aspects. Mr. Zeki Sarıbekir mentioned that it's important for all corporations to set their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on an international level, that this concept will become more prominent in the future and that this will be the agenda of the world in terms of sustainability. Mr. Zeki Sarıbekir explained that one cannot conceive a world without packaging that the industry develops with a sustainability goal that the new generation is an opportunity for the packaging industry and that packaging and logistics are among the industries that will become the most prominent in the future. Mr. Zeki Sarıbekir said thanks to all stakeholders attending and contributing to the congress.

The new generation is an opportunity

In a striking presentation, Inter-Generational Leadership Expert & Workplace Communications Specialist Mrs. Henry Rose Lee, who attended the opening session of the congress from UK, said there have always been differences between generations. Mrs. Henry Rose Lee said the ‘Baby Boomers' (those who were born between 1946 and 1964), ‘Generation X' (those who were born between 1965 and 1980) and ‘Generation Y' (those who were born between 1981 and 1996), who are currently in the managing position in their companies can only maintain the sustainability of their companies by remaining compatible with the new generation and that this is an opportunity for the packaging industry.

Warning against 'Greenwashing'

The guest speakers, the World Packaging Organisation President, Mr. Prof. Pierre Pienaar warned companies against the ‘Greenwashing' trap, defined as ‘misleading eco-friendly promises and messages' in his closure panel discussion. Mentioning that a communication work that puts an emphasis on sustainability will make positive contributions to companies in terms of reputation management, Prof. Pienaar highlighted that this should only be carried through accurate and solid Prof. Pienaar said the messages of brands about themselves and their products should be genuine as well as transparent and emphasized that one should avoid communicating false messages to the public for the sake of appearing to be eco-friendly.
